What is GTA roleplay?
GTA roleplay (GTA RP) turns Grand Theft Auto into a live improvised story. Instead of chasing missions, you create a character and stay in that role with other players on a dedicated server.
How it works
RP servers are run by communities, not by Rockstar. Each one adds scripts for jobs, money, housing, vehicles, phones and police systems. It also writes its own rules for how players must behave. Some servers are open to anyone. Others are whitelisted: you apply, sometimes with a character backstory, before you can join.
The rules most servers share

| Staying in character | Everything you say and do in the game is your character, not you. |
| NVL (no value of life) | Acting as if your character is not afraid to die, e.g. fighting back with five guns pointed at you. Not allowed. |
| Metagaming | Using information your character could not know, such as a livestream or a Discord chat. |
| Powergaming | Forcing an outcome on other players that they could not respond to. |
| RDM / VDM | Random deathmatch / vehicle deathmatch: attacking without a story reason. |
How people play GTA RP today
On PC, with GTA V plus a multiplayer mod platform. The largest is FiveM (RedM for Red Dead Redemption 2), built by the Cfx.re team. Rockstar Games announced in August 2023 that the Cfx.re team had joined the company. Players install the client, pick a server from its browser or a community site, and follow that server's rules.
What about GTA 6?
